A Step Into The Darkness
Ameer Al Oudh Intense Oud is as dark as the abyss, like The Kraken Black Spiced Rum, a liquid of unparalleled darkness made of Caribbean rum from molasses and ten more secret spices. The cologne is rich, smoky, and spicy, with an incense vibe, and leans towards a forceful character. I don't find it too intense on the oud, which is clean here, not skanky or screechy like medicinal sap. Instead, it is stronger on the musky and smoky side. Before diving into the scent, let me say that Lattafa's quality is superb. Both bottle and cap are on the heavy side, glass, and metal with no plastic. The cap is so heavy I could use it as a paperweight.

Ameer Al Oudh Intense Oud perfume is an online blind buy, and it opens with a warm alcoholic explosion of sweet spiced rum, which is not mentioned but results from the mix of its ingredients. That booziness might annoy some people, yet it is alluring for me. Intense aroma of caramelised sugar and spices, ample and persistent with cinnamon, vanilla and nutmeg. Peeps out leathery saffron, not too dark, neither bitter nor stunning, just smooth and perfect. I'm not dealing with solid and acidic saffron; perhaps nutmeg smoothes and rounds off the sharpest edges of this prestigious deep red spicy powder. Instead, I go for a rubbery, slightly medicinal shade I find pleasant; it exudes a refined and clean oud, which is there in my face from the very beginning. That syrupy undertone is volatile and fades early while the spicy nutmeg lingers until the final stage. Meanwhile, from the cap where I usually spray a couple of jets, I get notes of roasted chestnuts, that smell that lingers in the streets during festive periods.

I get a rosy, powdery, and soapy tinge in the heart. The soapiness interlaces with the smokiness of the molasses, the caramelised brown sugar I encountered in the opening. The scent's soul offers a labdanum resin rich in amber facets with honeyed spiciness and sweetness that add oriental elements. It's truly an exotic yet comfortingly familiar smell with a leathery yet woody tinge, evoking ideas of dusty carpentry workshops. Although it is not similar, this aroma reminds me of another miserably discontinued masterpiece: Dolcelisir. So far, the spiciness, burnt sugar, and smoky wood are astounding. If you are wondering how sweet it is, it is lovely but not overly sweet or cloying. Instead, the oud's smokiness is not more prominent from beginning to end; it takes a step back after the initial burst.

The intoxicating and incensed vanilla grows during the dry-down, and with the moderate sweetish oud, they are the key players of the last phase. Smoky leather supports these two elements, even if it is not too strong, and the base is full of warmth and cosiness. Again, vanilla dominates along with nutmeg with a caramelised subtlety. Luckily, vanilla is spicy and not all too gourmand. A creaminess also lingers; perhaps the woody notes include creamy sandalwood.

Ameer Al Oudh Intensive Oud lasts a few hours and does not project too much on me. Perhaps because of my skin PH, performances seem like they could be more phenomenal. Even with several sprays, the scent keeps a contained projection, and I find it doesn't last very long, less than half a day, and then it becomes a scent next to the skin, noticeable by other people but me. I've got a recent batch produced 10.22 from Notino; the elixir might need to age a little to get bolder, like good liquor, into the barrel. Since I've worn it only once, it deserves more testing before my final opinion. Despite the nose blindness, it smells so good as far as I can catch it. I want it more and more. If there were ever an essence I could swim in, this would be the one. Instead, on the clothes, I get wafts of this scent the day after, so it sticks to the fabric. By nature, it is suitable for wintery cold months, and the mellow vanilla shimmers in fall and winter evenings, but even days. Ultimately, a step into the darkness.

I base the review and opinion on a bottle I have owned since December 2022.

P.S. I wore it once more yesterday January 2, 2024. This time I was able to catch its spiciness for many hours, during the night, and the morning after. It is still stuck on my T-shirt, with all that sweet and warm spiciness. The more it ages the better.

The roasted chestnut POWERHOUSE
A few glowing reviews online, so I thought I'd check it out. Massively tall and heavy bottle, with a nice and weighty metallic cap. Atomizer is simply superb with a pressurized feel and huge mist. Top notch presentation for a very inexpensive fragrance.

Unfortunately, what I wasn't prepared for was just how oudy this stuff is in the opening. I've seen some descriptions that list only two notes in the opening - oud and.......oud - (double oud?) - and if that's the case, they ain't kiddin'. Oudh Intense oud indeed! Synethetic AF, and a massive blast at that. Nothing funky or dirty, but clearly front-and-center. If you've ever smelled oudTouch or oudVanille from Franck Olivier, it's literally the exact same accord. Straight forward, medicinal, piercing and.....sweeeeeeet.

Yes indeed, just like in oudVanille, the oud in the intro sits on a fine bed of straight-up sugar. It's more obvious on paper after the first 5 minutes, but luckily doesn't overwhelm the blend as the fragrance develops. On skin it's a difference story - the sugar is nowhere near as apparent and the warmer base comes through with gusto. Well balanced imo. But what puzzles me most, is that despite oud being listed as a base note in many middle-eastern frags, the accord in this one doesn't seem to last at all. In fact, its recession is nearly complete within the first 40 minutes. After that, the warm, slightly sweet, slightly smokey and nutty base comes out to play....

And that's when the resemblence to the drydown of Maison Martin Margiela's By the Fireplace becomes rather obvious. Not the smokey opening - but the warm-ish sweet nutty drydown. And that's basically how it remains until the end of the fragrance, which is.......well I'll let you know when that is, because this stuff is RELENTLESS. It just keeps going and going and going and 8 hours later we're still projecting like a mofo....12 hours later we're still getting wafts, 15 hours later it's reading me a bedtime story. Luckily, soap and water do seem to have SOME effect, so it's nothing like MFK's Oud Satin Mood, which seems to stand up to sandpaper and a blowtorch.

Overall, I'm very impressed with the stability of the blend. Although it's fairly linear after the initial oud vacates the premises, the quality of the scent doesn't seem to deviate at all. Twelve hours in, it smells pretty much the same as the first hour. And that's no easy feat! But I suppose that's par for the course in middle eastern perfumery? I wouldn't know. Don't have much experience myself.

But what I do have experience with is a variety of quality inexpensive fragrances, and this one is right up there with the best. Haven't smelled a decent replica of By the Fireplace since Commodity's Velvet (pun intended), but whereas that one captures the hollow smokiness rather well, this one has the sweet, nutty drydown covered. Superb value for the money, especially considering the performance and additional quality of the bottle. Perhaps not the most complex fragrance of all time, but a great one for the cooler months. No worries about cutting through the cold either. If you can get past the oudy opening, you're golden. Roasted chestnut golden. Enjoy!

The better By the Fireplace
In my opinion, the Ameer Al Oudh is a further development of the By the Fireplace. They are both very smoky, but I find the By the Fireplace to be pure, unpleasant smoke, as if you had been smoked through by the cloud of smoke from the campfire. The Ameer Al Oudh, on the other hand, has this pleasant vanilla that complements and softens the smokiness perfectly, creating a very pleasant fragrance.
Now considering that the Ameer Al Oudh only costs €19, I see no reason to buy By the Fireplace.

Smoky-sweet drydown star
After application, there is a somewhat synthetic note at the beginning, but this disappears completely over time. After about 30 minutes on the skin, this is barely noticeable and the fragrance is very similar to Replica - By the Fireplace. The more time passes, the more difficult it is to distinguish between the two. It is only after several hours that a difference becomes apparent again, as Lattafa's durability is somewhat weaker.

In detail, I would describe the fragrance as slightly sweeter, the smoky note is present, but not overly penetrating as you might expect. In terms of the season, the fragrance is definitely a winter/autumn player, which can create some coziness on cold days.

All in all, a really well-rounded fragrance, especially considering the price. Absolutely worthy of a blind buy.

Narcissus (1597-1599)
"I bury my head in the pillow, and dream of my true love..." - Michelangelo Merisi Da Caravaggio

Being deeply connected to art, you are given an ability to notice the depth behind it, and detect scents that are connected to it. I witnessed that phenomenon seeing the Narcissus painting for the first time in my life.

First thing that came to my mind was Ameer al oudh, intense oud by Lattafa. There is no explanation for this scent besides the indescribable profundity. The amount of delectable and so sweet darkness we receive is not from the physical world. Only when looking into our darkest desires are we able to find it. Being so obscure it is impossible to not love yourself as Narcissus did so badly. Fragrance is dangerous and purely arousing that one can go crazy for. Dive into places you have never been to, use it and feel the extreme emotion when it lingers to your skin during the coldest and the darkest night...

Very similar to By the Fireplace by MM. Perhaps a bit less sweet and slightly more smoky and linear. It lasts and projects like mad!

Like Kraken Rum, it has a boozy, smoky, and spicy flavor with an incense vibe and a forceful character. There's no dirt on the oud. Awesome!

Sweet burnt sugar with a middle-eastern touch. Very powerful, very long lasting, sometimes even a bit too much. Don't overspray!
