Fall in all of its apple glory
Oh, I've been waiting for this one. Ever since I spotted it at Sephora, I've been waiting for a sample to become available. Ellis Brooklyn's interpretation of apples was made for the heart of the colder fall season. It's sophisticated, like a crisp red apple waiting to be harvested. The top notes are the most divine thing I've smelled: the accord is reminiscent of a luscious ripe red apple skin and I wish it would've stayed longer. The middle notes transition into this harmonious blend of flowers that add a tad of sweetness to the scent, without transforming it into a sugary mess. The blend of fruits and flowers in the middle is well-crafted. The drydown retains the sweetness, but also becomes a bit more dark with a bourbon vanilla musky and woody blend. I did smell a faint sharp synthetic note, but it wasn't detrimental to the overall vibe of the perfume.
The thing that irks me the most with this one is the longevity and the sillage. They say it's an eau de parfum, but I feel like it's more like an eau de toilette and even a body mist (!). It becomes a skin scent about 10 minutes after I have applied it and never really projects far. I have a feeling you could definitely overspray it and still not get a good scent bubble which is kind of bad for a 152$CAN perfume. I've smelled other Ellis Brooklyn fragrances (I even have one of their discovery set) and I know they can make stronger fragrances. I still added a bottle to my collection because the thing is a beautiful deep red (one of my favorite colors) and the scent is just so beautiful. But for people who are on a budget, there are better apple fragrances with better cost and quality ratio out there.
I cannot review this perfume without comparing it to Eden Juicy Apple | 01 as it has been mentioned several times in other reviews. While Kayali's interpretation is akin to a sweet, juicy apple with a cute upbeat vibe and a slight synthetic shampoo scent, Ellis Brooklyn's interpretation is a bit more sophisticated, mature and a bit on the darker gourmand side. Both do feature apples as their main star, but Kayali adds sugary sweetness while Ellis adds floral warmth. I don't think you necessarily need both in your collection unless you're really fond of apple, but both are sufficiently different that you could have both for different fall moods.
