Review: Mate-O is a mate themed perfume. Opens with bright herbal notes which quickly turns smoky and tea, combines a light floral touch which makes it easy to wear. In the base adds a cozy sweetness of tonka and vanilla. An overall easy-to-wear smoky mate scent with fun changes.

Maté-O, A Unique Matcha Olfactory Experience

[Opening] A generous amount of bright green with a touch of spiciness immediately assaults the senses, reminiscent of finely ground dry leaves (even matcha powder).

[Development] Notes of jasmine, ylang-ylang, and a milky quality start to emerge and envelop the greenery. Meanwhile, the tobacco and slightly sweet, dry herbal notes of chrysanthemum provide a balanced contrast.

[Transition] Completely enveloped in a sweet milkiness (from Tonka bean and vanilla), the overall composition becomes deeper, akin to thick and viscous matcha after adding water.

[Conclusion] The fragrance settles into a distinct and authentic frankincense note (consistent with my daily-used oud incense). A smoky and animalic quality arises and blends harmoniously with the sweet milkiness, resulting in a fragrance that varies smoothly and continuously, much like a smooth spline in statistics (:

Overall, Maté-O distinguishes itself from Dusita's Erawan by offering more pronounced and extended three-phase transformations. It's a darker and more profound matcha, full of intrigue, and aligns well with the perfumer, Archie's fragrance collection preferences.

The background story of Maté-O can be found on OM parfum's official website. As the perfumer mentioned, "Maté" is the Spanish word for "yerba mate," while "O" is a common Latin name. However, I'd like to take "Maté" one step further and view it as "mate" in English, meaning "companion." In "Maté-O", the interplay between greenery and floral transitions, the contrast between brightness and depth, and the collision of sweet milkiness and smoky animalic notes all represent a dynamic relationship – one of contrast and companionship.
