Conceptual mood conveyors included
Wax and Thyme? these are the impressions I get from the tester that Puck1 had surprised me with (thank you!) before I applied the product
Well, it's not quite right after spraying on, apart from the fact that the true prelude is Durga-like as well, it means: It goes straight to the point. The thought of embers from spicy wood may fit, although after several tests I personally think of something that has already cooled down. And neat resin.

I also sense a rough base, which Patchouli will have a certain share in. I am sure of my cause because my wife (the Patchouli sniffer dog par excellence) in the afternoon expressed her unfortunately unavoidable judgement "cat piss". In addition a light resinous white smoke note - Elemi?

In the course of one or two hours, the smoky impression diminishes to an accentuated resinous one. I suspect, with which temporal dimensions I get to deal with it, because only very slowly, at first alone on the skin, makes itself the legend-we-Rose noticeable. If you want to call her that. Unsupported I would have typed on a contribution of scrubby Petitgrains.

What do I do with the cubeb pepper, which the dear water lily had particularly emphasized in her text? Hmm. I had a look at Mr. Schuhbeck's shop in the big Hanseatic city. Before my perfume days I hadn't even registered the shop, although it's been around for about ten years; now it's a fragrance presence library when it comes to spices.... It was imperative, at least as a component to be emphasized, that at least the type of cubeb pepper to be eaten there did not seem to me to be there.

Back to the rose: It's not until around noon that I can imagine a real representative of her kind; alienated, distorted. "Bitter" it would actually hit. Rather, however, I am thinking of sour resin with an addition of citrus astringency - and thus connect with the Petitgrain idea from above. I would never have thought on my own that this perfume could be named after Rose. During the afternoon a trace of mitigation creeps in. Nevertheless, it remains sour, the already expressed Vetiver hypothesis is not only plausible, but to underline. Besides it can be admittedly assumed other resinous-green stuff, with which it goes characterful and strongly into the evening.

Even clearer than with the sibling fragrance "Pale Grey Mountain, Small Black Lake" are also beyond the banal obvious cases - here: "The "burning embers", "molten iron" - individual fragrance notes more than just ingredients that might have to be ticked off. Mentions like "thistle (I don't know how it smells anyway!), clover or larch are parallel to it conceptual mood transporters.

And that works. Moreover, the listed aroma framework - strangely enough - does not seem to be mannered or even ridiculous at all. This will be due to the fact that Bitter Rose, Broken Spear, like its relative, is a successful and high quality product.

Conclusion: If you are looking for a rose fragrance, you are wrong about "Bitter Rose", but you should still try it. And everyone else, please test anyway.

Of deep-simmering warmth. Of memories. From autumn.
Rough, brittle landscape. Fire glow. Smoke lies glistening over the summer-dry autumn landscape in the last golden light of the almost setting sun. Where we are is left to the imagination, even if the author's writing suggests the appropriate Scottish Highlands.

To want to divide the notes after the pyramid into the traditional course quickly reaches a limit with this fragrance. From the very beginning, not only peppily, but also already now clearly resinous-smokey starting, the nouances shift more in favor of a warm dryness.
The rather abstract term'burning embers' hits the nail on the head with this fragrance. Smoke from the still glowing campfire conveys an incomparably pleasant warmth. Connects to the skin, ensures that the smoke does not appear cold, stale or unharmonious and immediately brings back memories of a time when I spent many nights around the campfire in the woods and tents. Staring at the crackling embers, the rising sparks and shreds of ash. The warming effect is supported by a dark rose so densely embedded in smoke and resin that it almost dries out and appears absolutely masculine. Herbs, carburized at the edge of the fireplace give a firm structure, shape the landscape just as much as the scent of drying, resinous coniferous wood.

The jump to unisex scent is not caused by the rose, but by a subliminal sweetness, which probably comes from the amber and becomes almost vanilla, but is always hidden under the leading smoke/resin mix.

For me, the fragrance is by no means cool, by no means bleak, by no means hard as steel. Rather it evokes great memories and a harmonious landscape with its deep glowing warmth - which perhaps has to be explored first - just as I feel well-scented. A fragrance to match the season, which can be considered rainy and bleak or colourful and varied

Memories of autumn
Bitter Rose Broken Spear

The old stones
meandering through the village
Furrows of the wheels

The old stones
still warm from summer
Houses from grey

The old stones
washed around by the eternal salt
Roar of the surf

The old stones
surrounded by bright smoke
Crackling of the embers

The old rose
lying in dry green
The wind is shifting

--------------------------------------------------------------

An extremely fascinating fragrance, which has fascinated me very much. Durga has again done what he does best - emotional nature scents.

The scent starts strong, bitter, herbaceous and very cool, a very aromatic herb infusion from the garden which goes in the bitter direction. Not bitter in the sense of e.g. Angelica Bitter or Herbal Bitter or Alcoholic Bitter, but rather bitter in the direction of the bitter juice of a plant stem.

Smoke is also strongly represented, one stays near a nearly extinguished fire, where herbs and thistles are dried over the embers. A mineral and metallic undertone resonates, which actually reminds of iron / welding and wet stones.

The rose flashes up from time to time, it lies in the dark and is covered with smoked herbs. After a few hours the scent becomes softer and warmer, probably due to the amber.

All in all, the scent reminds me very much of a small coastal town in northern France in autumn - faded gardens, dry herbs, smoking fireplaces, the old stone houses built close to the waterfront.

Shelf life is 8-10h and the sillage is rather strong, especially in the first two hours. Do not be put off by the rose!

Harsh crossover
You first have to find this fragrance.

For me, Rose is a clearly negative signal word. With "Rosenthal" I thought I had found the first rose that was compatible with me, only to find out after an extensive test that the rose, although dark, is still too dominant. In the case of "Hylnds - Bitter Rose, Broken Spear" it could have been indicative that the rose is not first named and at least is pursued by a (hopefully rusty) broken spear, at best decapitated.

"However, neither the "speerige" name nor a non-existent hype around this rather rare representative from the Hylnds series was "charming" here. Rather, it was once again the outstanding brand D.S. & Durga.
, because it fits me well above average
What would I have given to be allowed to test a sample set of Durga once. But unfortunately it was already too late for the participation in the corresponding hiking package. Think! If I had not met the nice "organizer" for another reason immediately before, I probably would not have approached him and asked for an additional nomination. And also in this case Fluxit proved to be a helpful and selfless perfume. Thanks again for the probably most important hiking package for me, on the occasion of which I would like to give a slightly superficial hymn of praise to the best Durga fragrance for me.

Of 22 tested and eleven Durgas in possession, this is an outstanding work. Only very rarely is it possible to elicit a certain suppleness and charm from a smoky, spicy fragrance. The top note comes across exactly as it is written. And afterwards one wonders why it doesn't go on EASY dry, lifeless and smoky unchecked like in so many other cases. If it wasn't there, at least I wouldn't think of it. But for once this unspeakable rose fulfils a reasonable purpose. Other ingredients are out of the question for me to trigger this surprising reconciliation. However, one should not be deceived by the subjective description of a smoking lover. The rose is not only bitter itself, it is also massively enclosed by bitter journeymen. Thistle, nutmeg and galbanum can be guessed. The rest... may be.

By the way, I would like to refer to Thoddü's commentary writing from my soul:
https://www.essencevitae.com/Parfums/D_S__Durga/Hylnds_Bitter_Rose_Broken_Spear/Comments/64940

Bitter Rose, Broken Spear? It actually took a while, but now I get it. A truly fitting name. Even if I estimate him above the current average, I find in objectively correctly valued. In terms of durability and Sillage, however, I cannot understand the verdict. "Hylnds - Bitter Rose, Broken Spear" is certainly one, if not the strongest Durga fragrance. And this is usually the only weakness of MANCHEN Durgas. Therefore this one shines for me here on all line!

I'll never eat thyme again!
My title's weird again? Well, I chose that because this scent has a strong thyme note here. And actually, I don't have anything against this herb. But you can imagine that now comes a "but". And you're right! But:

I was unsure how thyme tasted for a long time. And a dear friend had shamelessly exploited my ignorance. She once carried in her hand a whole bundle of this herb. And when I told her that I didn't know exactly how it tasted now, she offered me to try it. And she also knew very well that because of my ignorance I would put a lot into my mouth at once instead of trying a small piece of it. I mean, I didn't know that very well back then, how was I supposed to know that you can't put it in your mouth like "normal salad" or something like that in a larger quantity... because the taste,... well, was really really bitter,... bah... I get strangely stupid things sometimes...

I don't need to mention here that she laughed at it. Anyway, it wasn't as bad as it was when I ate celery (boaaah, celery tastes disgusting, and it was the same person above who said that I could try it because it would taste so good!!!)... D

Well, let's get to the scent!

The fragrance:
Afire? I have to admit, there's something to this. Even if you might ask yourself about the scent of burning embers, you know when you smell them that it has to be burning embers somehow. It's such a fiery smell that reminds me of beautiful summer evenings when you've been barbecuing and the coals are gradually getting smaller and instead of fire only some embers remain (but still very hot).
Anyway, I also smell kitchen herbs, especially the horrible tasting, but actually nice smelling thyme. I can't identify the other herbs so much, but I think I can still smell the clover, because the clover note from another D.S. & Durga fragrance seems so familiar to me, because thanks to the hiking package I was able to test all the fragrances one after the other.
Also in the base the fragrance is quite herbaceous, but also the glow note is still there, which in my opinion makes the fragrance more interesting. And despite an amber note, the fragrance is only moderately sweet. All in all, the scent didn't knock me out, though...

The Sillage and the shelf life:
The charisma is high, because the herbs smell strongly. Although the Sillage decreases faster with time than with some other fragrances, you can still smell the fragrance well with one or the other. The shelf life is quite okay because the fragrance lasts for the usual eight to ten hours before it becomes too weak.

The bottle:
The bottle is rectangular and filled with dark yellow scented liquid. The label on the front is a bit simple, but the lettering of the word "Hylnds" looks nice. The most striking thing I find is the large and glossy black lid. It's turned out okay.

Soo, despite my thyme trauma I still think the scent itself is okay (even the thyme scent itself), well, let's just say it works like this... it may not be a total collapse, but for me it's the worst of Durga's Hylnds scents I've tested so far!

Because I find it a bit too herbaceous, but if you like tart and intensive (kitchen) herbs in scents, you might like the scent here. Due to the "fiery" warm scent this scent belongs to me in autumn and fits more into my leisure time.

And I... I will be careful in the future what they offer me to eat... :D
