Business Scent No. 1
Hesperidic in the beginning, flowery in the heart, spicy, vetiver woody and earthy in the base. Perfumes with these fragrances are recommended for business appointments where women must be confident and convincing. It radiates self-confidence and strong sovereignty. So a chypre is exactly the right choice. Because this is how it is built and characterized.

31, Rue Cambon is on Luca Turin's Top Ten list of Chypre fragrances of fragrant perfumes in 1st place.

I only know 5 of his Chypre list, but of those Rue Cambon is undoubtedly the best. The most elegant, and also the most modern of them. The perfect scent for the job. Not necessarily for the normal everyday office life in jeans, but for all difficult or important appointments where you have to leave a positive and convincing impression. And personal strength conveys. It is present, but not intrusive, because it is made very high quality. And compared to Aromatics Elixir or Mitsouko it is modern, but not New Age. There is still genuine, high-quality French perfume art behind it.

Paris on the edge of the abyss, which I smell today at 80% of the mainstream scents of commercial trade,

But not at 31, Rue Cambon.

The EdP is the refinement of the EdT. Citric in the beginning with a very slightly spicy pepper note. I don't find the flowery heart too feminine, but it is dry and dusty through the iris, and more powdery than the EdT. Earthy through the patchouli and vetiver.

I have worn the scent many times before, last week I thought that for the first time after a long day I had noticed a light cinnamon note. Or am I spinning now?
That could have been the Labdanum. It was beautiful anyway.
On this day, I was brought back to the awareness that fragrances are on the one hand very adaptable, but at the same time very individual. Do what they want and are always good for surprises.

I think it's very nice that this chypre doesn't have any fruit sweeteners. That Oliver Polge replaced the oakmoss, especially the artificial one, with vetiver was certainly not a mistake, but the best thing he could do.

just around the corner
Today we would say that Coco Chanel was a "guest in residence" at the Ritz Hotel in Paris.
She lived here for many years and had numerous affairs, including with the musician Igor Stravinsky.
His wife and four children moved into her house just outside the city, which she had bought for herself and her great love Boy Capel, who died far too young.
She wanted to live there with Boy during his stays on the continent as his "left-hand woman", as he was also married.
So now she was accommodated here by the rest of the Strawinsky family.
She even paid the housekeeping money for them every month: Igor, however, lived in her suite with her - as long as it suited her! Of course, one day he was dumped too. He didn't want to leave, threatened her and the hotel's security service (as it would be called today) had to be called in.
Only a short time after his disappearance, Pablo Picasso stood outside her door grinning broadly: Yes, everything thrives on change!
But enough of the well-known and never-ending gossip about Mademoiselle; this is about a fragrance that bears the name "31 Rue Cambon" and refers to the house, just around the corner from the Ritz, where the company's headquarters are still located today.
Day after day, even in her old age, Mademoiselle, dressed all in black, with a small round black hat, deep dark red lipstick and a cigarette between her lips, could be seen on her short walk from the hotel to the center of her life, where she ruled with an iron hand: no one had it easy with her! So it is actually logical that a fragrance composition should finally be named after her place of work; here in the "Les Exclusifes de Chanel" series.

"31 Rue Cambon": A green chypre fragrance set against the sea of houses in the city of Paris - what a charming idea from Jacques Polge.
A chypre in all its classic manifestation, in which the never-missing bergamot aroma has been tastefully embedded in lots of green and briefly sprinkled with black pepper; this opening already points to a stylishly lively creation.
The charming floral heart, excellently dosed from fragrant roses, proud iris and cheerful ylang-ylang with its summery honey aroma, also delights according to the "law of chypre fragrances".
Patchouli, earthy and warm, provides a great base for all this casual, very wearable elegance, with cistus also clearly leaving its resinous scent traces.
The straightforwardness of the then revolutionary fashion associated with the name Coco Chanel was so skillfully translated into fragrance in "31 Rue Cambon".

A brief digression in passing:
When you think of her, you automatically think of the famous "little black dress" and the likewise black, short box jacket with which she went down in fashion history and which can still be found in fashion collections.
There was even a very interesting photo exhibition entitled "Little Black Jacket":
Karl Lagerfeld had photographed this garment on over seventy different models. The centerpiece was a large color photo with Claudia Schiffer; the majority of the photos are in black and white and therefore particularly attractive to look at.
Never before has a disused Berlin subway shaft been so well visited!
But probably the most famous "little black dress" is by Hubert de Givenchy and is worn by Audrey Hepburn in the movie "Breakfast at Tiffany's".

But back to the actual topic:
there are no limits to "31 Rue Cambon"; this fragrance is what you could call a classic "all-rounder".
Stylish yet with a casual elegance, it really does go with everything and is an adorned companion at any time of day and on any occasion, with a rich sillage and quite appropriate longevity.

You don't really need more than "31 Rue de Cambon" for a day in Paris; the rest can be bought there: There is an "emergency address" on the flacon.

Warmhearted
In my book, there are two types of enjoyable perfumes: the ones that please and the ones that excite. 31 Rue Cambon is a pleaser. It exudes both friendliness and elegance. It has a warm welcoming heart that is hard to not like. And it has quality ingredients that are engineered to perfection - resulting in a controlled performance and maximum wearability. Personally I would wear this on evenings out or on cozy casual occasions.

I don't detect much development in 31RC. The pepper note is prominent in the opening, but it fits surprisingly well in the smooth slightly powdery composition. The chypre base feels very familiar and highly refined. It gives off a lovely glow-in-the-dark warmth. Mildly radiant, never too much.

This whole lovable care-bear glow is also why I consider 31RC a perfume that does not excite. There is no drama here, and nothing that shocks, awes or surprises. But that is fine. Sometimes a warm heart is all you need.

The most beautiful "sanctuary" of all time
This wonderful perfume is described by Chanel as "Gabrielle Chanel's refuge in the heart of Paris". The address must have been exceptionally beautiful to create such a fragrance and name it after it. Unfortunately, I've never been there.

It is well known that 31 Rue Cambon is a chypre of the finest kind. As can be seen in the various fragrance pyramids, it begins slightly citrusy with green notes, which are soon accompanied by roses, iris and ylang ylang. I can't smell the individual flowers because my nose is not that trained. But that's probably not the point, as anyone can read about the composition of the floral combination in the fragrance pyramid.

The base is then enriched by very fine woody and slightly spicy, earthy notes which, in combination with the fine citrus and floral notes, evoke associations with a late summer forest for my nose. When I smell the perfume, I see a forest clearing in the afternoon in August in the sunshine, namely when the light is already more golden and slightly more subdued than in early summer due to the approaching autumn and the fruits, needles and leaves of the forest trees exude their spicy scent due to the dryness, while the last meadow flowers are still competing for the late insects. Then I immediately feel grounded and a love of nature spreads through me. That's why I love this perfume so much and when I use it, it's just for myself and I don't care whether others notice it or not.

In the end, I can totally relate to Gabrielle Chanel's idea of naming this fragrance after a "sanctuary". It is truly an "essence of beauty". Will there ever be a more beautiful chypre?

Lovely in the summer
To me this screams urban summer - great for the office, great for wearing on a weekend strolling around the city, when a different perfume would be simply too much in high temperatures; great for mornings and evenings alike. It's fresh, it's just a bit green and just a bit flowery, it's perfect. I fell in love with it!

Peppery patchouli floral. Extremely chic and complex. Someone said this is the "sweaty supermodel" fragrance, and i can see why. Excellent.
