she followed her star
"Les Exclusifs de Chanel": This series brings together fragrance compositions that each represent a chapter from Coco Chanel's life For example, "Coromandel" shows her love for the precious screens of the same name, with which she lavishly decorated her hotel suite in the last years of her life; "Boy" refers to her great love for "Boy" Capel, who died in a car accident (I have already discussed this love several times here) and "Misia", Misia Sert, dedicated to the "muse of Paris" and also from the House of Christian Dior (see there: she was also his muse and trusted friend) with a fragrance of the same name, find their place here.

But how does "Le Lion de Chanel" fit into this series? Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel was born under the zodiac sign of Leo and attributed her strength, her genius and her passion to this proud image; she even believed that she embodied its characteristics perfectly.

So it is only natural that a fragrance was also dedicated to this part of Mademoiselle: Sensual, leathery and resinous-smoky, radiant:
"A Star was born" could be the title of this stylish and pleasantly wearable composition by Olivier Polge.

Resinous, leathery and sensual, this creation makes itself comfortable on my skin, settles in for a long time and envelops me without losing the radiance of bergamot and lemon and also the warmth of the sensually soft vanilla in the leathery-ambery labdanum smoke and an earthy golden-brown patchouli beauty with creamy, but also masculine-animalic sandalwood accents. Here, each fragrance component corresponds with the other in a balanced and harmonious way.
We can almost see the shadowy figure of a proud lion striding majestically out of the fragrance mist, lingering briefly.
But after just a moment, this apparition disappears again, leaving behind a memorable and elegant scent that is always appropriate.

Once again, I was surprised by the transparent yet rich beauty of one of these creations of the new Chanel fragrance generation, for which father and son Jacques and Olivier Polge are responsible.

I will never join the fan club around Mademoiselle, but I really like what I have been able to get to know recently through generous bottlings of the newer fragrance creations.
Yes, in some cases I am even enchanted by what I discover, by this unfussy elegance with that certain something that adorns and accompanies so stylishly and elegantly.

It's almost a little difficult for me to pass on these bottlings; but I keep my promises, even if it takes a little longer this time for the fragrance letter to travel.
I know that the next surprise could be waiting for me just around the corner in this highly interesting world of fragrances.
Today I'm going to wrap myself in "Le Lion de Chanel" once again, but soon it will be time to say:
"Allons-y"!

Lioness
Elsa Schiaparelli and Coco Chanel participated in one of the many Parisian high society balls of the 1930s. The two designers hated each other so much that Chanel, asking Schiaparelli (dressed as a tree) to dance with her, took the opportunity to push her against a candelabra. The fire was put out, the "Italian" was sprayed with soda by the amused guests.
A strong, majestic woman and, for many other aspects of her life, with great tenacity: with this fragrance Coco is represented as a true lioness, also making reference to her zodiac sign.
Strong notes: labdanum, with slightly leathery nuances and an incisive amber are accompanied initially by light citrus scents then by vaniglia in the drydown.
An amazing, bold fragrance that I would really happily use, perhaps for the colder seasons.

The Symphony of the Lion
Rare are the times when a fragrance comes around and sweeps me off my feet and has me coming back for more, again and again.
This is one of those.

The first time I tried it when it first came out in 2019/2020 I was completely repulsed by it and yet, I couldn’t stop smelling it. I wasn’t ready for this Lion.

Now, a few years and 1000+ smells later, I fell head over heels.

The sparkling opening with an amazing bergamot and lemon blast is breathtaking.
However this sparkle is just there to tame the HUGE throbbing punch of smoky, sticky Labdanum that comes surprisingly and powerfully right along the opening stomping the beautiful citrus pop.

The heart is cold, regal, austere and quite proud.
A resinous yet cold cold incense along with the Labdanum and a benzoin nuance.

Now the base… warm, cozy yet powerful. Sticky, resinous yet powdery. A warm blanket of vanilla and benzoin covering what could be a harsh bed of patchouli and a leather impression, if it wasn’t expertly curated by Chanel.

Because yes, even though this deviates from the usual Chanel format we know and love - it also doesn’t.

It has most definitely that Chanel thing.
The oh so elegant soft, powdery, aldehydic presence and an inimitable blend.

Le Lion, an homage to Coco Chanel's zodiac sign.

And what an homage this is!
Pulling together some of the best elements of the greats: the creamy amber patchouli of Coromandel, the smoky leathery aspects of Cuir de Russie, the cold incense heart of 22 EDT/1932 or 31 Rue Cambon; and a far sight of Guerlain’s Shalimar with that citrus pop that settles to that glorious Labdanum and vanilla; while not being close to any and having a marked personality.

It's almost like an orchestra, a symphony of every Chanel fragrance playing a perfectly tuned Masterpiece composition.

Not for the faint of heart. Not for everyone. For me.

Chanel's Le Lion
I have continually been impressed by all my progressive testing of Chanel's Les Exclusifs range, and was particularly intrigued by the various descriptions I had read about 2020's Le Lion release. i am not sure what else I can add to these word character limits without giving away some of my review, Hope you enjoy the review.

Patchouli, next!
Animalic and citrus-bright at first. Then it develops into a dirty, complex, leathery scent. Le Lion has an immense ambery halo that takes it more and more into oriental realms. But oh dear, I sense some patchouli here. A bit too much patchouli that is disturbing the otherwise lovely amber.

Absolutely convincing in terms of quality. In composition, not so much. Let's just say it is not my taste. I am glad that I tried it, though. Now I know what all the fuss is about. And that is going to be it for me. I will pass the sample on to a lucky unaware EssenceVitae sooner or later. Next!

This scent gets better and better over the months. Complex yet versatile. Deep yet easy going. In the same vein of Derby & New York Intense.

Magnificent fragrance, carries very little similarities to Shalimar, only faint resemblance. Best Chanel's work in years for exclusives

Beaut. interplay of citrus-labdanum-leather. Creamy citrus dries down to CdR style birch tar, and toffeed labdanum swirls about. Stunning.

Heavy oriental beast. Smoky vibes with a lot of resins. The leather of the lion in the African desert. Harsh on the beginning, soft end.
