Metamorphosis
Musk Vernaculaire goes through a few difficult stages before it becomes a rewarding wear. It starts with an animalic type of musk with rancid soap properties, not too far off Original Musk Blend No. 1. The next moment it seems a civet cat had a little accident and soaked the hay stack. Eventually the dirty notes disappear completely and make place for soft florals and an amber-woody base. Smooth, creamy and well-behaved. A complete metamorphosis!
But is it worth the wait? Nah. I like how the different stages build up to a somewhat unexpected end result. This one, however, has to come from very far before reaching a comfortable form and it never really surpasses a mere acceptable soft-floral-on-benzoin. Going through a rough opening should be rewarded with a glorious drydown and that is simply not the case here.
