Something about time travel and so
Dear EssenceVitae diary,

today I went on a time travel to countries long before our time. Ok, before my time. My entourage knew the time still very well. I was accompanied by older gentlemen, weather-beaten their countenance, the hair in my memory white as snow, perhaps one or the other also carried a wig, it was usual at their time decades ago, centuries, oh what, myriads at years. You will have recognized it, Yatagan and his crew were with me.

Actually, we were going to an event, an excavation for dinosaur enthusiasts, we had missed it, hence the time travel, which was many years too far. Actually, we only wanted to travel back to last Thursday. Instead, we were now stuck in the age of the dinosaurs, whether it was Cretaceous or whatever, I do not know.
We decided to wait, 2023 will come already. There I noticed a smell on one of the Yatagans, for simplicity and because of my poor memory for names I called them all the same with their powder wigs and robes. It was less animalistic than the dinos here but still herbaceously animalistic. Thyme, basil even refreshed thanks to the citrus. Some lavender was also in the air but of a moderate nature.
"Tell me....Yatagan II, what is it?"
"My name is Leonard."
"I say. Kenny, I mean Lenny, so?"
"Mixed it up here from my travel provisions, watch how that goes. I plan to release the 1980. However, due to time constraints and T-Rex population reasons, it still fluctuates."

Then it went on, herbaceous fresh, characteristic features like a dry coarseness joined the other olfactory impressions. And by coarse I do not mean Taueresk but rather a la rugged rock cliff. A gloomy note, for me now no longer animalic, climbed to the top of the scent. A fine smoke, which had penetrated leathery, herbaceous notes and now as a darker triumvirate rushed forward.
"Yes...that gives me an idea...Sturm und Drang...."
"Excuse me, Yatagan XIII?"
"Johann please."
"Of course. Johann. Now let me keep rambling on please and pretend I'm having a dialogue here."

So the melange became successively more introverted, but it retained its basic orientation. Much further I came then unfortunately no more because a Carnivor discovered us. Shortly before I was then eaten, I thought only:
"I have seen things that you humans would never believe. Giant ships that were burning, out off the shoulder of Orion. And I've seen C-beams, glittering in the dark, near the Tannhäuser Tor. All these moments will be lost in time, like tears in the rain. Time to die."

Some fragrances are in the rain er I mean by EssenceVitae yet not completely lost, as I would realize if I had survived. Over and out.

Not Your Typical 80s Scent...
Leonard pour Homme goes on with a dash of bergamot and cinnamon that soon couples with leather and oakmoss in the early heart of the scent. The soft suede-like leather and green oakmoss tandem takes over as the scent develops, now joined by herbal clary sage that has an almost aromatic lavender quality, spiked with perhaps a small amount of clove spice to darken the scent just a tad as its development progresses. During the late dry-down the oakmoss recedes to reveal benzoin that slightly sweetens the remnants of the leather as violet leaf adds a fine powdery sheen to the finish. Projection is above average and longevity is average to slightly above average at 8-9 hours on skin.

The discontinued leather chypre Leonard pour Homme in its smoky brown bottle (not to be confused with the much later and completely different smelling release from the house still in production, Leonard Homme) is a great rarely heard of treasure. Unlike many of its peers of the early 80s, it does not join the powerhouse category but is rather tame by comparison. Its soft suede leather facets coupled with green oakmoss, aromatic clary sage and the slightly powdery violet leaf late are just the perfect mesh for such a distinguished scent that can be worn anywhere and anytime with pride. It is really a shame this great composition by Winnegrade does not get more attention because it really is one of the best releases of its time. While as previously mentioned Leonard pour Homme has long since been discontinued, but 100ml bottles are still relatively easy to find on the aftermarket for $50 or less which is an outright steal for a 4 star out of 5 excellent smelling fragrance of this quality. My advice is buy while you can before sellers come to their senses.

An immense leather and castoreum musty vibe
This one opens bone dry with a pungent lavender, powerful carnation, and I can immediately sense an immense leather and castoreum musty vibe building in the background. Later on this masculine animalic leather overshadows anything and everything else that might be going on.

To me Leonard PH comes off as a cross between a less floral Van Cleef & Arpels Pour Homme and Chanel Antaeus on steroids. It shares their dark vibe, but is much more rugged. I only wear it on the coldest of nights, and it is sure to induce weird looks from anyone who's only ever smelled contemporary bubblegummy-amberwoody perfume.

I don't know if it's the maceration in my 1990s bottle, but this projects like a MF. All I need is 1 small spray on one wrist, which I then smear onto the other wrist, and I'm good for hours.

Masculinity Level: The creepiest hitman ever, Javier Bardem in No Country for Old Men.

Leather Chypre Extraodinaire
Leonard pour Homme, leather chypre par excellence, introduces itself with spicy olfactory fanfare – basil and thyme prominent in the fore. When the lovely screeching recedes a bit, wormwood/artemisia attains prominence. Smokiness also emerges, i guess, from patchouli and cedar oil among other ingredients of the frag. Perhaps because I live in the tropics and naturally exposed to direct heat sometimes, it is not long into the wearing that the animalic castoreum and leather ingredients ascend into my conciousness. Resinous labdanum sings in harmony with the smoke-sodden leatheriness to deliver an accord that may be a bit scary to the Acqua di Gio crowd. There is not a smidgen of sweetness in this frag. Baroque pipe organ music and the eerie sound of ghosts and crazed bats seem to be the appropriate sound track for LpH.

LpH is similar to Van Cleef and Arpels pour Homme, but less flowery. It also reminds me of Francesco Smalto pour Homme, but is a bit more herbal and oily; Trussardi Uomo without the tobacco notes, or a more resinous Bel Ami. In all its darkness LpH is not a room-strafing powerhouse like Trussardi pH. Lph has amazing longevity. 9+ hours after applying I still get authoritative whiffs of leathery darkness.

Aromatic leather hippy
Making its artemisia and joss stick debut - with a powdery note to add brightness - Léonard pour Homme develops into a full bodied fougère with a hint of white florals.
The keynote leather chypre base gives it the brown corduroy feel of the seventies - even though it was released in 1980, after the advent of Punk Rock and Margaret Thatcher.

Clove, tar, grated white soap, smoked leather, labdanum, a few drops of petroleum and castoreum (among others). Perfection.
