From dull to interesting
Oh dear, it’s labeled a Chypre. Inevitably, that will trigger a debate on whether or not this is a proper chypre. Sigh.. Contrary to our demand for top notch artistry in terms of scent composition, we expect a perfume's name that precisely depicts the contents and leaves no room for imagination. Silly, isn't it? Let's skip the semantics and pay attention to the fragrance itself.
It all begins with a shot of pink pepper. A soft opening, though, as the rose presents itself in a light and dry form. A sense of freshness without explicit citrus notes.
The heart has an airy character. Rose mainly, supported by a light patchouli and some white musk. I feel there are some similarities with Heeley's Chypre 21, which is also a light rose/patchouli/musk interpretation.
The scent remains in this fluffy floral state for quite a while. It even starts to feel a bit dull. But slowly, around the 3 hour mark, the musk base changes shape. It turns from breezy white to a more restless type. Darker in tone but still a bit refrained. A bit of a suspense: Will it get 'unsettling animalic' from here? Sadly, no. It fades out before it gets anywhere near animalic. Nevertheless an interesting turn of events that adds a bit of character to the otherwise underwhelming experience. Done in a classy 'le Galion' manner. Maybe the name makes sense after all ;)
