Pink salad
Okay so Pony Boy refers to a mythical creature in Scottish folklore, the Kelpie. My intrusive thoughts were going in a completely different direction with this Pony Boy name and pinky color. For sure they did that on purpose. Scent-wise, the color is a bit of an indication of where this is headed, though. This is going to be something fruity and zesty with grapefruit, rhubarb and beetroot.
Strictly speaking, beetroot and rhubarb are vegetables, although their color and fresh scent profile are kind of fruity. Add a grapefruit, lotus and some grassy stuff to that, take out all the sweetness and what you get is something vegetale and zesty-green. I mean, pink.
In fact, this has pretty high levels of acidity, which does not always go well with me. Yesterday I tried Un Jardin sur le Nil for example, and that went pretty bad. I blame that on the sharp notes like lotus and calamus and the sourish aftertaste that come with them. Although Pony Boy is not so close in terms of scent, there is a similar effect from these zesty vegetales and greens.
The acidity levels in Pony Boy may even be higher that in the Hermes. But somehow it works on me this time. The difference may be that Pony boy has a little grainy bitterness to offset the acidity, instead of a fruit juice type of sweetness.
So that start has a peculiar choice of notes, typical for McCall's way of working. When things settle down it gets a bit more grassy-grainy while the acidity remains high. At this stage, I find myself losing interest. Things are still nice and fresh, no loss of quality but it does feel less and less intriguing compared to the opening notes. Bottom line, I do not feel tempted to revisit. I may finish the sample and that is that.
