The smell of the rainbow
Dreams!
Sometimes a dream comes true
Sometimes we lose a dream And sometimes we are given a dream that heals the soul and the heart
Once upon a time there was a young man who wanted to fulfill his childhood dream. He wanted to bring a dog into his life. The destiny was that nine little Doberman puppies were born. The choice was not difficult for him. Among the nine puppies there was only one bitch. It was love at first sight for both. So he took the little bitch in his arms and carried her into his world and into his life. almost at the same time the young man got his first bottle of Jicky. He loved the perfume very much, which scented of the finest powdery and spicy lavender. The fine dusty spices mixed with warm resinous and balsamic tones of the most delicate vanilla, ambergris and tonka. And he loved this aristocratic and sublime animalism from civet which, like a cozy purr, breathed life and passion into the perfume. So Jicky became his signature scent and he wore it every day and night
Since the little bitch was still very small, the young man took her every night and put her on his bare chest to sleep. So both could hear each other's breath and feel their heartbeats. Thus a very deep bond to each other and deepest love was created. Because of the close cooperation it resulted that the fur of the bitch also smelled like Jicky. They "shared" the perfume, so to speak. Even if the young man did not wear Jicky for one day, it was still visible in the fur of the bitch. So Jicky had become not only his signature scent, but also hers. The years passed and the once small bitch became a proud and majestic animal. But not only an animal, but a soul animal! They understood each other nonverbally and without many words. They respected and respected each other and showed their love for each other every single day. And they often slept arm in arm with each other and the scent of Jicky accompanied them in their dreams. Very, very many years.

Twelve and a half wonderful years passed and the young man became a mature man in that time. He grew older and so did the proudly elegant Doberman bitch. But unfortunately much too fast! All that remained unchanged was Jicky, which connected the two like the deep love for each other. Once the man told the bitch to show him in her own way when it was time for her to go. And she showed him! So the man took her on his arms like once as a puppy already and carried her away like he took her once. And so they went together to a place from which only the man would return. To a place where the noble bitch would have no more pain. And so the man went his hardest way in life and held her in his arms until the last moment. In this moment when the bitch closed her eyes and walked over the rainbow bridge, not only a part of his heart went with her. Also Jicky left and the man never carried Jicky again. The pain and the memory was too big and his world darkened from that moment on!
Many, many years passed and the man still cried very, very often when he was alone. Too great was the pain in his heart and the loss. For ten years he avoided Jicky and everything that smelled of lavender. He still loved Jicky, but couldn't hang up without feeling a stab in his heart and getting sad. And so the memories of Jicky faded like the spicy and anal smell of Jicky himself who once accompanied him and his bitch. life went on for the man and he had managed to control the great pain and loss in his heart and soul. But it was still hidden deep inside him. So it happened that the man lay down in his bed late in the evening and closed his eyes. And he began to dream.........

The man was standing on a dusty, stony dirt road in the open countryside. It was summer and the sun shone down on him warm and soft. In the distance he saw his deceased Doberman bitch. He could see her fine elegant silhouette against the sunlight. She stood on a high, green hill. He knew immediately that it was her. She had recognized him too, it seemed, and began to run towards him slowly at first, then faster and faster in a fast gallop. The dirt road was lined with lush fields of lavender swaying in the wind and exuding their delicate spicy scent. He could smell it! The bitch came running towards him more and more. She drew a powdery trail of dust behind her on the way to him and in her elegant movements she resembled an Arabian stallion. Shortly before him she came gently to a halt. The man said not a word and looked at her only smiling in his dream. She was beautiful! Her pitch-black coat shone in the sun like black silk and he could see every single filigree muscle underneath. She too only stood there and looked at the man. She was in her very best years Majestic, proud, beautiful, noble and full of sublime grace, power and elegant animal perfection. It looked like she was smiling and the man knew she was smiling and looked deep into her amber eyes where he read that she was happy. And then he saw that she had brought him something as a gift. In her muzzle she wore a beautiful fragrant, long-stemmed red baccarat rose across her muzzle. It was her gift of eternal love, gratitude, loyalty and affection for him!
The man awoke from this dream crying with tears in his eyes and he still heard himself whispering her name. But he was not sad, but very, very happy. He knew she did not only come the long way from rainbow land to his dream to show him that she was very happy. She also wanted him to be happy again! And he knew what to do! So he brought his old signature scent back into his life. He was not afraid to hang up Jicky this time. Not anymore! And so he put it on where he liked to wear it best, on his chest. And it was just like in his dream. He smelled the fine-spicy lavender, felt the soft-balsamic warmth, the tender greeting of the rose and the elegant and anal perfection on his chest. But he also felt something else on his chest... A tender, second heartbeat beside his own!

At the end of the rainbow we meet again...

Since 1889 in the program: fragrances you should know, for example "Jicky" !
"Jicky" has been on the market since 1889 and prepared the ground for modern perfumery.
From the structure a real Fougére:
Bergamot and lavender frame a heart of geranium, followed by a balsamic base of vanilla, tonka, coumarin and civet. The bergamot determines the fragrance at the beginning, it encloses the green herbs and lavender, which are also present. Zibet then plays a key role: it combines the woody parts of the fragrance with the floral heart of rose and geranium. Spices are also very subtly incorporated, a little cinnamon, which gives warmth and leads to the balsamic base, where vanilla and coumarin, both synthetic, meet.
The creator of the fragrance, Aimé Guerlain, balanced each note very carefully.
Therefore, the mix of lavender, vanilla and civet does not seem old-fashioned, on the contrary, it still seems wearable today.
"Jicky" is also a unisex perfume of the first hour, much more stylish than many perfumes designed with the aroma-chemistry sledgehammer of the last 20 years, completely independent of whether they come from the "niche" or mainstream.
The Eau de Toilette in particular allows a look back into the history of French perfumery, as it has particularly finely worked top notes.

The "New York Times" hired a perfume critic in 2006. A laudable effort, because it's harder than you might think to find your way through the perfume forest. Anyone who was not allowed to grow up in a perfume-affine environment and only starts to smell the world of fragrances as an adult needs some orientation beyond the first phase of the primary fragrance experience. In recent years, a number of very useful books have been published on the subject, many initially in English, written by American or English fragrance experts*.
But luckily the French are catching up.
I find the book "Les cent onze parfums qu'il faut sentir avant de mourir" ("The 111 perfumes you should have smelled before you die") by the authors' collective "Nez culture" very inspiring and much more vividly and knowledgeably written than many a text written by Luca Turin.
That "111-Perfume-Book" begins - how could it be different - with an article about "Jicky".
Unfortunately the book has not yet been translated into German.
As fun facts, the authors* always mention for each of the fragrances described in which films they played a role and who is said to have worn them.
With "Jicky" the row of celebrities is very long: Fanny Ardent, Brigitte Bardot, Jane Birkin, Joan Collins, Jackie Kennedy, Roger Moore etc.
The average time needed to buy a perfume is 30 minutes. I learned this from reading the book "Perfume: A guide to the world of fragrances", written by none other than Jean-Claude Ellena. 30 minutes of tasting several fragrances. 30 minutes in which the base notes have not yet unfolded. Mispurchases and disappointments are pre-programmed.
The clever perfume fan makes a pre-selection.
"Jicky" wouldn't be bad

World Heritage Fragrance? Fragrance World Heritage! (or: True beauty is imperishable!)
Who knows me a little, knows that I am very fond of the house Guerlain. If the scents of modern times don't always manage to inspire me, it's the old classics that fascinate me more and more.
At the beginning of my perfume days, I found many such fragrances simply old (fashionable) and not exactly appealing. But that has changed fundamentally. Lucky for me. The more intensively I have dealt with fragrances, the more unimagined worlds of fragrance opened up - especially with the classics. Probably just takes time to grow into. So the "EssenceVitae-Bildungsauftrag" was a success ;-))

A few days ago the inconspicuous sample of the Jicky Extrait fell into my hands by chance. The EdT and EdP I know and appreciate very much, in so far the extrait test was only a logical continuation of this series.

The Extrait starts directly with the lavender whip, which carries a few citric sprinklers with each turn. One must endure this prelude and/or I simply times. Probably this opening is also due to the year of origin.

The animal is also right there. At first anything but a purring kitten, rather a hissing big cat. But still well-bred. She knows how to behave and deal with her strength.

After this very fulminant start, the fragrance becomes visibly calmer and softer without becoming boring or even arbitrary.

Delicate rose and flowering jasmine are well complemented by the somewhat bitter iris root to avoid drifting into an all too common floridity.

The animal is still present and slowly enters purr mode.

The further the fragrance progresses towards the base (this fragrance deserves the term quite rightly), the more balsamic, softer and rounder it becomes No more thought of the scratchy lavender (at best still as a hunch), but now super soft guerlinade, soft unfortunately, fine spices and slightly resinous amber-colored amber. And under everything lies the now gently purring kitten.

Jicky - what a beauty and what a delight! It is almost unbelievable that this fragrance is so old and yet not old-fashioned. A timeless and ageless beauty that simply convinces. And I don't have to beat any capers for that. Jicky has an immense power without being loud. Jicky touches heart and soul, is comforting, demanding and enveloping at the same time. Jicky is pure seduction without being offensive. Jicky's... so much more and actually impossible to describe. A fragrance that must be experienced.

Jicky - a fragrance for women AND men who want to experience the balancing act between yesterday and today.

Thank you Guerlain!

Aimé's big hit

Pierre-Francois Guerlain was a young chemist and doctor when he opened a small store in Paris in 1828. He was primarily interested in the world of beauty and perfume. This was not yet an industry at the time.
He created his first fragrances such as "Esprit de fleurs" and "Senteur des Champs". From 1830, he insisted on creating a unique fragrance for a unique woman. His success grew steadily and he became court perfumer to all European courts. Guerlain continued to expand and became a family business.
If I were to write the history of Guerlain here, it would fill pages, but this is about Jicky.
When the sons Gabriel and Aimé followed their father in 1864, Gabriel took over the business and Aimé the creation. After Aimé's success with "Fleurs d 'Italie" and "Excellence", he decided to break away from the constant floral perfume trend with a new, innovative fragrance. He had also just fallen in love with a young English woman, who probably inspired him to create Jicky. He experimented with synthetic products such as vanillin (an aldehyde from vanilla) and coumarin. Jicky became a completely new kind of fragrance and started off with cirrus-bergamot, herbal notes. Whole fields of lavender were harvested, which were reinforced by other green ingredients. A few flowers are just extras and negligible.
Woody animal notes, smoky and dipped in suede.
In short, Jicky, originally conceived as a women's fragrance, became a scandal after its release. Dandies and bon vivants wore it. Mostly in clubs or salons. André loved Yves, but only behind closed doors. It wasn't allowed, of course. Both of them would have alibies with little mistresses who sat at home and taught the children to put the napkin on their laps properly, sit up straight and use the cutlery in the right order, while their dad cuddled with a cuddly friend in a separate room. Fortunately, times have changed and today everyone can cuddle with whoever they want.
From the early years of the 20th century and with advancing emancipation, women also discovered jicky for themselves. Corsets were passé, dresses and hair became shorter. Women smoked with long cigarette holders and thought about Siegmund Freud's babble.
Jicky is still one of the great Guerlain classics, although from 1925 onwards Shalimar somewhat outstripped it.
Jicky lacks any sweetness and is not for gourmandines and dinosaurs. The good housewife who screws in curlers in the evening and brings the sweatpants patriarch his slippers and fried potatoes with aspic will not wear Jicky either.
Jicky is a statement. Elegant, somewhat unapproachable and actually unrivaled.
Only for adults or those who want to be.

Warning, X-rated...
In my collection, Jicky has conquered the lonely place at the top for absolute office unsuitability. Unless I change to the accounting department of an hour hotel, he is optimally in place. My vintage version is so indecent and not virginal that I was shocked the first time I put it on. In contrast to the relevantly pre-loaded scent of ELDO, which I found sweetly salty and not X-rated, Jicky spreads the aroma of extensively and above all passionately used sheets and beds... Thankfully no cigarette after, but everything before is in there.... Since the innocent lavender is also of no use:)
Supposedly the Guerlain fragrances used to have the reputation of being for the cocottes, mistresses and other demi-mondains while Caron was for the finer ladies of society. With my Jicky I believe that also immediately!
