Less is more, but more can also be more
Opening with a finely peppery, citrusy freshness, Place Vendôme spontaneously has the feel of a summer fragrance. And this remains the case for the first twenty minutes or so, until the citrus has receded and the fragrance becomes warmer and softer. Powder is then added as it progresses. I really like the powdery note, it creates a sophisticated impression and for a brief moment I thought that I could have easily assumed it was a Chanel. However, something sweet is soon added, which diminishes the Chanel impression again. I really like the sweetness, even if I don't perceive it as honey, it's certainly not the burnt sweetness of Maltol, which has ruined so many other fragrances for me.
Summer fragrance? No, in the meantime Place Vendôme has become a fragrance that can no longer be classified in terms of seasons. It is light and bright enough to be worn in spring and summer, its mildness and pleasant sweetness are well suited to fall, and the increasing, powder-dry warmth makes it suitable for winter, despite its lightness.
The fragrance notes also give me the impression of a so-called evergreen: Citrusy freshness that fades, calming, light powder, a friendly sweetness and then dry cedar as it progresses, all rather restrained. The pepper remains throughout the entire fragrance.
A really successful fragrance.
Nevertheless - something is missing for me personally. That certain something. Or maybe nothing is actually missing. Maybe it's just that I don't like the orange blossom style that much, that I always find pepper fragrances too artificial in large doses, and that cedar is not an appealing fragrance for me in itself. For me, cedar is a note that can be wonderful in combination (as in Theria, for example). But it can also be meaningless and unattractive, in which case it is not distracting. Or, together with certain musks, it can evoke an unpleasant smell of plastic in me. Fortunately, the latter is not the case with Place Vendôme, but unfortunately neither is the former.
Place Vendôme is beautiful. I can wear it with pleasure and satisfaction on various occasions. But I am a perfumer. I know other fragrances, including so-called evergreen fragrances, which not only convince me - whether because they have that certain something extra or because they have less pepper and fewer notes that are rather unappealing to me - but really inspire me.
